Since the beginning of the parade 51 years ago, the parade has undergone several name changes. Sawchuk said the title refers to the streets near Greenwich Village in New York City, where stone walls and other places cater to LGBTQ people.

We found a lot of footage in the ABC7 news archive dating back to the 1972 parade, when it was called Christopher Street West. Sawchuk said there was a picnic “gay” gathering at Speedway Meadows in Golden Gate Park.
